Bottle or Breast, Which Is Best?

How to make the best decision for you and your baby.

Since the advent of baby formula, the debate has raged: bottle or breast? As a new parent, it can be hard to know the best way to feed your baby. There are so many decisions to make, and everyone has a different opinion about how to best take care of your baby. Currently, science indicates that breast milk contains the perfect nutrition for a baby’s developing body and brain. Despite this, there are some circumstances in which breastfeeding isn’t possible or ideal. For those cases, baby formula made with a balanced blend of nutrients is available to give babies what they need for health and development.

No matter what choice you make, don’t judge others who choose differently. This is a very personal decision that can be difficult to make. Moms have to decide what is best for themselves and their baby. Keep reading to have confidence in either decision.

Why Breastfeed?

Breast milk is sometimes called “nature’s perfect food.” That’s because a woman’s body naturally produces milk designed specifically to meet the nutritional needs of a growing baby. Most doctors recommend breastfeeding exclusively for a baby’s first six months of life, then as solid foods are introduced, a baby should continue to breastfeed until they are at least one year old.

One of the major perks of breastfeeding is the price. It’s completely free! Formula, bottles, and nipples, on the other hand, can be rather expensives. Breastfeeding is also convenient, as there’s no formula to mix or warm and no bottle cleaning necessary.

There are also many health benefits of breastfeeding for babies. Since it’s easier to digest than formula, breastfed babies tend to have fewer problems with gas and constipation. Breast milk contains natural antibodies from the mother that help strengthen the baby’s immune system, reducing the illnesses baby suffers. Breastfeeding may also reduce a baby's risk for health issues later in life, such as obesity, asthma, allergies, diabetes, or other chronic illnesses. Breastfed babies are less likely to die from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), and some studies suggest that they may have higher intelligence than their formula-fed peers.

Breastfeeding also benefits mothers. In addition to trimming pregnancy pounds, breastfeeding provides skin-to-skin contact and special bonding between a mother and baby. Women who breastfeed may even have a lower risk of developing breast cancer, ovarian cancer, osteoporosis, diabetes, and heart disease.

Why Bottle Feed?

When breastfeeding is not desired or possible, formula offers a great option. Some women are physically unable to breastfeed or have health conditions that prevent them from breastfeeding. Other women choose not to breastfeed due to discomfort or other reasons. In these cases, formula is a great choice!
One of the major perks of formula is convenience. This is one of the main reasons that families with busy lifestyles choose formula. After all, breastfeeding is time consuming, especially during the first few months when baby does little more than sleep and eat.

Formula feeding also lets dads, siblings, and others get in on the action. With bottles, there’s no pumping or storing milk involved. You simply mix the formula with water, make it the right temperature, and start feeding! It’s so simple that anyone can help out, not just mom!

If you use formula, you may not have to feed your babies as often, as formula takes longer to digest than breastmilk. And new mothers appreciate the freedom of eating and drinking whatever they want, a perk that is only available with formula.
