Unintentional Harm

Six ways you’re weakening your immune system without realizing it.

Your immune system has the important job of defending the body against foreign invaders such as viruses, bacteria, toxins, and fungi. When these dangerous antigens show up, they trigger the immune system to get to work. Antibodies are then produced to fight and destroy the antigens. Once the battle is won, the antibodies stick around to protect against the same antigens in the future, preventing you from getting sick.

With the COVID-19 pandemic still raging, you hear a lot these days about strengthening your immune system to fight off infection. You want a healthy immune system, but you may be weakening your immune system without knowing it. How?

Here are six ways you may be harming your ability to fight off illness.

1. You’re Stressed Out

Even short-term stress and anxiety weaken the immune system. Chronic stress that goes unmanaged does even more damage. This occurs due to the stress hormone, cortisol, hindering immune cells from doing their job of fighting infection. When this happens, you’re more likely to get sick. Relationship problems, financial strain, discontentment on the job, or caring for a sick family member all cause stress. Learn healthy ways of managing stress or talk with your doctor if your anxiety feels overwhelming.

2. You Skipped Your Workout Again

Exercise is one of the best things you can do to support a strong immune system. Physical activity reduces inflammation, increases blood flow, and strengthens antibodies that fight illness. Sitting all day or skipping your workout on a regular basis puts you at an increased risk of illness and disease. Move more throughout the day in addition to your daily workout and you’ll help your immune system work its best.

3. You’re Skimping on Sleep

Your immune system needs sleep to do its job well. Without enough quality sleep, immune cells are weakened and reduced in number, inflammation in the body increases, and you’re more susceptible to everyday illnesses and chronic diseases. Also, when you get sick, your body takes longer to heal if you don’t sleep well. Adults need between seven and nine hours of sleep each night for good health. Rearrange your schedule to get better sleep. Your good health depends on it.

4. You Stay Indoors All Day

Sunlight may get a bad rap for its role in skin cancer, but you need some sun exposure for good health. When your skin is exposed to the sun, your body produces vitamin D, a nutrient that plays a vital role in immune system health. The farther you live from the equator and the more time you spend indoors, the less vitamin D your body makes. Sunlight also strengthens immune cells that play an important role in fighting infection.

5. You Had One Too Many Drinks

Drinking too much alcohol weakens your immune system. Do this often, and you’re more likely to get sick and take longer to recover. The problem begins with your liver. Because it plays a role in immune cells production, damaging your liver simultaneously damages your immune response. Men should have no more than two drinks a day and women no more than one.

6. You Eat Too Much Fast Food

Face it: there are very few fast foods that are good for you. They’re high in sodium, added sugars, and saturated fat. And all foods like this harm your immune system. An unhealthy diet contributes to weight gain and throws off the balance of good bacteria in your gut, both which can weaken your immune response. Want an immunity boost? Eat more fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean protein, and low-fat dairy. For an additional boost, consider an immune system supplement, such as TruLean Immune Support Wellness Shot.
