Creating Your Personal Spa

Seven simple ways to turn your bathroom into a spa retreat.

After a long day, you just want to unwind and decompress. While stress is a normal part of life, it can be harmful to your physical and mental health if not managed in healthy ways. One of the ways people manage stress is through relaxation techniques such as meditation, deep breathing, Yoga, or guided imagery.

If you’ve ever spent time at a spa, you know how relaxing it can feel. Since visiting a spa every day is neither in your budget nor your busy schedule, why not create a spa-like retreat in your own bathroom to come home to each evening?

Keep reading for a few simple ideas to get you started.

Clean and Declutter

It’s not easy to relax in a dirty, cluttered bathroom. The first step toward a spa-like bathroom is to declutter. Clear off the countertops, pick up laundry off the floor, and throw away trash. Go through your cabinets and get rid of things you’ll never use again.

In order to declutter, you may need to spend some money investing in better storage. Shelves, hooks, racks, trays, jars, and baskets make organizing easy and attractive. Hide away as much as possible so only your daily essentials are visible.

After you’ve decluttered, give the bathroom a thorough deep clean from top to bottom.

Calming Colors

Consider making a few cosmetic updates. Paint the walls in a soothing, calming neutral color or soft blue. Choose a shower curtain with similar neutral tones. For a soothing atmosphere, avoid bright colors and bold patterns.

Accessories

Truly want that spa-like feel? Purchase new, fluffy, soft bath towels to wrap up in and padded floor mats to rest your feet on. Take things to the next level with a towel warmer. As final touches, don’t forget a big, fluffy bathrobe and cozy slippers.

What about a wooden bathtub tray? While you’re relaxing in the bathtub you’ll have a place to set your glass of wine, soaps, and loofah. A tray also provides a place to prop up the good book you’re reading.

Welcome Nature

Adding a few live plants or fresh flowers to your bathroom will bring nature in to create a spa-like atmosphere. Do your research to find which plants thrive in bathroom environments. Set a vase of flowers on the counter or a potted plant in the corner. Just be careful not to place things where they’re at constant risk of being knocked to the floor.

Calming Scents

Some scents are known to awaken your senses and energize you. Those aren’t what you want in your spa-like atmosphere. For aromatherapy, light a few candles or use an essential oil diffuser. Use calming scents such as lavender, vanilla, and jasmine. Pamper yourself with indulgent soaps, foot scrubs, and lotions designed to promote relaxation.

Music

Music has a powerful effect on your mood. When you need to unwind, calming music can make a big difference in lowering your stress levels. Make a spa playlist to turn on when you’re in your bathroom retreat. This might be nature sounds or soothing instrumental background music. Use a waterproof, bluetooth speaker in your shower to bring the calming sounds right where you are.

Shower Head

If you’ve got money in the budget, one of the ways you can pamper yourself in your personal spa retreat is by upgrading your shower head. You may not get a real massage for your aching muscles, but you can be massaged by a shower head.

Really want to do things right? Install a soaking tub or jetted whirlpool tub—whichever you prefer.
